In 2004/05, CFHI launched our first round of Community Health Initiatives in an attempt to support health projects devised by the doctors and other community leaders who host and teach our students. To date, CFHI has supported 11 Initiatives at a combined cost of ,000, a number we hope to nearly double in 2007. Below are brief descriptions of some of the project submissions we supported in 2006-07 at an overall cost of ,000:
• Bolivia: Children Living in Jails — Integrates three complementary phases: medical aid, child psychological and social support for children who must accompany their parents to prison.
• India: Leprosy & HIV— Provides reconstructive surgeries to 30 leprosy patients, special footwear to 50 more, and CD4 count tests for 100 people who are HIV+.
• Ecuador: Stemming the Rise of Type 2 Diabetes — Designs a tracking system for 130 patients with Type 2 Diabetes in the rural and remote areas of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
• Mexico: Assessing Tuberculosis in Rural Communities — Facilitates a study to assess TB prevalence rates, prominent types of TB and co-infections that may exist in the area through a questionnaire and corresponding sputum testing regimen.
• Ecuador: Healthcare for Remote Jungle Communities — Supports the sixth year of trainings for 47 Community Health Promoters in the Ecuadorian Amazon to serve indigenous communities.

Since 1992, Child Family Health International has run global health, service-learning electives for over 3,500 pre-medical, medical and other students of the health professions. Students travel to Bolivia, Ecuador, India, Mexico, Nicaragua and South Africa to immerse themselves in new cultural contexts and to learn about the way healthcare is practiced and experienced worldwide. CFHI also offers scholarships to students to support diversity in the healthcare professions.
