About Ben
Dear All,
My name is Wayne Lineker and I have something and someone very special and close to my heart that I wish to share with you all. I have set up a charity page through PayPal which will enable you to make donations.
Why am I doing this?
About a year ago, I was invited by a very thoughtful lady by the name of Janet Smith to join the now very famous "A wish for Ben Roe page." I was understandably curious as to why she sent the message to my inbox as this was a little more personal. I went on to read the message and immediately fell in love with little Ben. I joined the page and contacted his mother, Lynn, as I felt this was someone who not only did I find inspiring, but could truly look up to and I was right.
Little Ben was born with Down Syndrome and, just before his 2nd birthday, he was also diagnosed with Leukaemia. Leukaemia is a condition which I am familiar with as my nephew George had this terrible disease and is very fortunate to be still with us today. George, thankfully, has fully recovered and is now an amazing young man of seventeen, whom I love dearly - and he undoubtedly loves his uncle Wayne too, probably because he’s just so cool, ha ha!
Yet George was one of the very lucky few. Things are even tougher for Ben and his amazing family as he has Down Syndrome too. As I write this, it would be true to say that I am tearful… Little Ben, my Lil’ Warrior, has less than a 50% chance of survival and is battling against the odds. We pray and hope that like George, Ben is of those few fortunate ones.
Some time ago, I approached Ben’s mum to see if I could help raise some money through my bars and my company, Linekers Group and she was overwhelmed with the gesture of support. I have since then decided that the best way to do this is to attach a charity page on my profile for Ben. By doing this, people have the opportunity to read his story, look at his pictures and see for themselves just how spirited and courageous my Lil’ Warrior is.
In February, I went to visit Ben and I have to tell you that it was one of the most special moments in my life, a moment in time to cherish and a day that I will never forget. Ben is supported by an amazing and wonderful family and my feelings on Ben were affirmed on our very first meet… He is the most special boy I have ever met. We had an amazing day altogether, playing games and having fun and to see this little boy, with all his problems, joyous, laughing, running around and with an insatiable zest and passion for life was simply the best.
Amusingly, however, I did introduce him to my girlfriend Anna, who is also helping with the page and Little Ben was being very cheeky, showing off in front of her and playing, I am sure he had a crush on her! Ben took to Anna immediately, and needless to say we immediately fell for Ben too.
To have Ben take to me the way he has is so very, very special and just last week, he fell asleep with a picture of me in his arms, it really doesn’t get any cuter than that! I have now become a part of Ben’s life and this is my heartfelt plea so that you too can become a part of Ben’s life too give him a chance. Even if we improve his situation by 1% then we have helped, and whatever I and you can do to help is the ultimate motivation behind this message.
I am going to post all the donations to my profile as well as the page unless of course you wish to remain anonymous. I am also hoping that some of you may be able to host or participate in an event for Ben, something fun like a sponsored run or parachute jump which would be ideal methods of raising funds for my Lil’ Warrior. There will also be a credit card facility set up as another method of donating.
Where will the money go?
It will go into a fund for Ben and it will be used to give him the best possible chance of happiness. Ben love's camping and it would be ideal if the family could afford to purchase a static caravan so that we could all take him camping. Unfortunately, Ben's condition makes it very difficult for him to be able to travel abroad and due to the high and ever present risk of infection to Ben the location would need to be within the safe vicinity of a hospital. Any surplus money will be donated by his mum to a charity she endorses and that is close to her heart.
There is one last thing before I go… Ben’s mum, Lynn, took a lot of persuading for her to give me permission to go ahead with this as although she obviously wants the best for her boy, she never intended for this to be her goal after opening the ‘Wish for Ben Roe page’ – this is my own personal statement and has in not in any way been influenced by anyone and least of all, Lynn.
Thank you so much for taking the time out to read this and please donate, whatever the amount and give my Lil’ Warrior a fighting chance.
Every donation is gratefully received.
Please email me at lilwarrior10@yahoo.co.uk and I will forward you all the relevant details you need to make a donation. Thank you all so much for your help.
All donations and payments to Ben will be clarified and confirmed by e mail to me, once again thank you.
